Comfy Couch Sitting Delayed by Midterms!

I hate to say it, but Almost Normal and school just don’t mix right now! Neither does anything else apparently!
I’m taking two classes and they are a LOT of work! Midterms are due over the next couple weeks, so I’ve been working my tail off! I think I’ve finally got basic modeling in Maya down, but laying out UV’s is a PitA! I think painting the textures is gonna be cake compared to getting the shapes down! I’ll share the results as I finish them.

I’ve also joined Weight Watchers and Curves. It’s been 2 weeks and I’m down 9 lbs! I’ve been prepping foods on the weekend that I can grab and go during the week, and that takes a whole lot of time! Also, after 2 weeks of workouts, I’m still tired and sore when I get home from the gym. Supposedly in another two weeks, that’ll go away.

I can’t wait for all these life changes to become habits that I don’t have to think about! That’ll hopefully free me up for more personal art work. Also, it’s about damn time I learned how to play that bass guitar I got for my birthday 5 years ago!

Lastly, my kitties are adorable, though Rarity might disagree! Miss Pixel got her claws into Rarity’s mane and, well, here’s the result!

Miss Pixel’s all like, “Am I supposed to care about your insignificant hair problems?”

And Zuko’s all like, “Don’t tell anyone I like my belly rubbed! You’re not taking a picture are you?”

That is all for now! I’ll be back with some comics and art soon!

Life Delayed by Comfy Couch

I was incredibly unprofessional this weekend. After 3 weeks with no furniture, I finally got a comfy red love seat and ottoman! I relaxed the hell out of this weekend! It sucked me in and made me completely forget about any priorities I had other than sitting on the couch! I think it’s evil, it IS red like the devil!

Give me a few days to catch back up with things and I’ll get my professional grove on again! Work is my priority, I just gotta stay off that couch so I can remember that!

Today’s Comic Delayed by Life

by admin on September 30, 2011 at 4:07 pm
Posted In: Uncategorized

There WILL be a new comic by tomorrow. Life just happened the last couple days and got in the way of comic drawing.

I’ve started keeping a book where I write down all my comic ideas. I’ve got almost 3 months of comics in there, now I just need to find the time to sit down and draw them all!

Blizzard Entertainment is visiting my school next week and I’m submitting a portfolio for review. My goal is to get a 2D artist internship there for Summer 2012. Wish me luck everyone!

Between the portfolio work and midterms, this comic may be on a bit of a funky schedule for a couple weeks, but I will continue to maintain it. No more year hiatuses, I miss it too much when it’s gone. :)

Thanks for all your support folks!

Commissioned Comic Guest Strip

by admin on September 5, 2011 at 2:10 am

I had the awesome fortune of doing a guest strip for Obsidian over at Commissioned Comic, and I went and messed up the file by not saving it as RGB! Doh! In my defense I was racing Hurricane Irene to get it done before we lost power, and my brain doesn’t work well at 3 am, but that’s really no excuse and I am incredibly sorry! Here is the properly colored version of the strip.

So sorry O! Please forgive me!

Digital Doodles, $5!

by admin on August 30, 2011 at 4:44 pm

Hey Folks!

In a very silly move yesterday I found myself spending valuable gas money on an iPhone! To be fair, I had planned on purchasing one in November when my contract with Verizon was ready to be renewed, but my poor old Samsung Rogue just couldn’t hold out that long. The touch screen decided to go on me yesterday, and a very good sales person talked me into purchasing the iPhone now instead of later.

So now, having dipped into my gas money for my trip back to Savannah, I find myself in need of replenishing it. I also find myself in need of some digital sketching practice, my poor Cintiq is gathering dust with lack of use.

So here’s the deal, you go over to that nifty PayPal Donate button over there, top right hand side there, and click on it. Send me $5 and leave a comment here on what you’d like me to draw for you. I’ll do a fancy digital doodle like this:

Or this:

Only better and composed of what you want in it! I’ll even turn it into an icon or avatar or something like that if you’d like. :)

If you decide to donate more than $5, I’ll even add some color to your digital sketch. And if you decide to donate some absurd amount of money that I’d never expect, then I might even refine the sketch into something polished!

No matter what, all donations will be appreciated, especially by my parents because at 34 years old I really shouldn’t be asking them for gas money anymore. :)

Thank you!
Lonnie

Two More Places to Find Me

by admin on May 23, 2011 at 12:46 pm

I know it’s been a while. This has been a tough year for me both personally and academically. Almost Normal is still alive inside me, I just have to find my voice again.

In the mean time, there are two other Blogs that I’ll be keeping this summer that I thought folks here might be interested in.

100 Days of Doodles
Once again, I’ve decided to give the 100 Days project a go. We’re on day three, and I find my stream of consciousness doodles fascinating. Others may or may not agree. :)

Lonnie DiNello, Intern!
This summer I’ll be interning at Free Lunch Comics in Granby, CT. I’ll be shadowing artist Matt Ryan and learning what it takes to be a freelance artist, run a studio, and produce my own independent comics. There will be a full, 20 pg comic finished by the end of this internship, story yet to be determined.

I hope everyone is doing well! Thank you for standing by. :)

Finals Done!

DiNello_p13_posting

Summer Quarter is finished! I’m sad to see it go. My confidence in my abilities has grown tremendously this quarter. I really pushed myself on the last three projects in my Drawing for Sequential class and I surprised myself at how well I did! The two images above were my last two projects in the class. With the final project, the Boar’s Head Inn drawing on the left, I fell back into my old habits a bit, waiting till the last minute to get everything done. In doing so, I reverted to my more toony style, especially in my figures. My professor says it’s important to have at least two distinct styles you can draw in so I really pushed myself to develop a more comic book feel this quarter. The previous project, the courtyard at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in NYC, was much more successful in what I’d been trying to accomplish in this class.

I think my biggest eye opener at how much I’ve improved was our final in class assignment. We were given less than 2 hours to do the drawing below and I surprised myself at how quickly and easily this image found it’s way to my page. I even finished early!

Sadly, I don’t have much art to show from my Game Design class. I put a lot of effort into the mechanics and text of the games, which netted me some sweet grades, but I let the ball drop on the artwork. I think this was due to the class being online. I know I tend to work much harder when I’m in a classroom setting. I know I should be looking at every project as a portfolio opportunity though, grades aren’t what’s going to get me hired.

I found myself falling back into old habits of procrastination, especially near the end of the quarter. I was beating myself up about them until I pulled back and reminded myself how much I’ve improved overall. Change does not come overnight, it a long term process. I’m getting better all the time, and I will always have areas to improve in.

I worked really hard this quarter and I’m really proud of the work I did. I hope I can carry this momentum into my fall classes!

Work work!

This was the first of the three main projects for the class I’m taking this summer. We had the choice of doing a bookstore or a dinner with 4 characters, one of which is over 40. I’ve never done a drawing using a perspective grid before and I think I’ll keep using them from now on!

Drawing for Sequential Art has been my favorite class so far at SCAD! My professor is Tom Lyle, former Spiderman artist. He rocks! If you need to take this class, take it with Tom, but only in the Fall or Spring. Winter and Summer quarter make the field trip to River Street for some observational drawing miserable! I was soaked in sweat after an hour of drawing in the hot noontime Savannah sun! Apparently your fingers are so cold in the winter you can’t draw either. :)

Work’n hard!

Well Now…

*cough*

Hello, my name is Lonnie DiNello and I am not a complete failure! I have spent the last couple months filled with regret because I didn’t keep up with the 100 Days Project and because I haven’t updated Almost Normal. Today I came to the realization that regret is a useless emotion, just like guilt, and all it does is hold a person back. So, I have come here today to tell the world that I forgive myself for not posting comics the way I wanted to. It’s ok, I can let go of the past and start living in the now.

Now, with that off my chest, here’s what I’ve been up to since I got back from Connecticut.

1. I got Kittens! That’s right, Kittens!

This is Zuko chasing his little sister Pixel!

It all started with driving my friend and her cat to the vet and falling in love with the most adorable little rescue while I was there. After a brief campaign through Facebook and Twitter my boyfriend could no longer say no and my beautiful little Pixel came home with us. Yay!

Three weeks later Pixel returned to the vet for her second set of kitten shots and I was informed that her brother was still there, the last of their litter without a home. After a whirlwind of black market high pressure tactics and a botched negotiation on my end, I found myself out side the vet, dazed and confused with TWO kittens in the pet carrier! Martin was very surprised as well.

Pixel was not happy to share her home or her family with her brother, Zuko. Our little runt of a kitten bullied her larger sibling into hiding behind the couch and under the bed. After a few days though, things started to settle down and now we’re a happy family of four. They kittens are a very happy distraction for me. :)

2. I started my summer classes! I’m taking Drawing for Sequential Art with Tom Lyle, former artist for Spiderman. He’s totally awesome and very encouraging. He’s even got me thinking about possibly working for one of the Big Two someday, living that childhood dream of drawing the X-Men or something like that. It’s good to have someone telling you they believe in you, especially when he’s been there and done that himself. I know ultimately its how much I believe in myself that’s going to determine whether I succeed or not.

I’m also taking Intro to Game Development and Interactive Design as an online class. I was supposed to be taking a professional class working with Zynga, but the class was postponed to next quarter, so I picked up the Intro class last minute. Unfortunately that means I have to take it online, and I hate online classes. I’m doing well though. I already created a board game that my play testers thought was lots of fun. I’m going to finish it eventually and make it available to folks. Now I’m working on an Interactive Pet Feeder for my next project. It’s a very geeky project.

3. I got a part time job! I’m working in The Cage at the film and digital media building on campus. I’m surrounded by expensive equipment, games and game systems! I get to do some school work while I’m here (when I’m not making blog posts) but it’s still a job and takes up a bunch of time. Money is a nice thing to have though, even if it is minimum wage. Networking with all the future film directors and game gurus is a plus too!

So, I haven’t been updating my comics like I wanted to, but I have been busy living a pretty full life. I probably shouldn’t mention that I’ve reached level 30 in FrontierVille though, but oh well. :)

Hope you’re all doing well! I miss hearing from you!
